This means the need for identification of labor trafficked victims in the USA and getting them the help they need
is not being met.

WHERE DO LABOR TRAFFICKERS FIND AND HOW DO THEY LURE THEIR VICTIMS?

Recruitment can happen anywhere, often through:

  • Ads for work opportunities, domestic and international
  • Targeted job offers, IE. modeling, management
  • Placement agencies
  • False promises, fraud over workplace conditions
  • Ever-increasing debt for room, board, work clothing or equipment
  • Smugglers demanding additional payment that the person cannot pay
  • Familial: by one individual or a family group
  • Posing as a benefactor followed by abuse

 

WHO IS MORE AT RISK OF RECRUITMENT AND OF BEING TRAFFICKED?

Individual circumstances:

  • Take chances away from home
      • to avoid desperate situations or conditions in their home country
      • for a better life for their families
  • Do not understand U.S. labor regulations
  • Have language barriers
  • Have developmental learning disabilities, mental health issues
  • Follow available seasonal work

Environmental circumstances: 

  • Fleeing persecution or conflict
  • Fleeing poverty and deprivation
  • Working in remote, hidden, inaccessible areas

 

Culturally appropriate prevention and awareness education is key. International collaboration will help end labor trafficking.
